In 1917, a quiet winter morning in Halifax Harbor turned into one of the deadliest disasters in human history. Two ships collided, unaware that one was secretly carrying thousands of tons of explosives. For twenty minutes, people watched the fire burn… then the harbor disappeared.
The explosion created a blinding fireball, a shockwave faster than sound, and destruction across the entire city. Nearly 2,000 people were killed, thousands were injured, and countless were blinded by flying glass. To this day, the Halifax Explosion remains the largest non-nuclear explosion ever recorded.
This is one of history’s most shocking and lesser-known tragedies.
