The Switch Cruise 21-300hp is a budget-friendly, value-driven pontoon with the heart of a personal watercraft. The modular, customizable line from Sea-Doo debuted in 2018, and for this model year, higher-horsepower options have been added. Since it’s now capable of higher speeds and quicker acceleration, we were excited to get behind the handlebars and try it.
Highlights
You read that correctly: you won’t find a traditional steering wheel on this Switch, and that’s what makes it so much fun to operate. Similar to the handlebar steering found on Sea-Doo’s personal watercrafts, the captain has full control. The exclusive Intelligent Brake & Reverse (iBR) is the first braking system on a pontoon, and it greatly reduces stopping distances. It also provides more control and maneuverability at lower speeds around the dock.
At the helm is a 10.25-inch touchscreen with BRP’s GO! app integrated, which is packed with navigation features. The digital gauge is part of the tech package upgrade, which includes two JL Audio corner audio units at the bow and stern. There is also a glovebox, part of the composite helm design, with a Digitally Encoded Security System (D.E.S.S.) key, providing an added measure of protection against boat thieves.
The two-tone gray seats provide ample seating to meet the 10-person capacity. If you’d like a different layout configuration, you’re free to choose your own adventure with this modular deck system. Every seat—besides the captain’s chair—can be easily relocated or simply removed from the boat if desired by simply lifting the neon yellow tabs below each section.
Rear corner doors on all Cruise and Cruise Limited models are also new and will help ease boarding and improve accessibility to the swim platform.
LinQ accessories are found throughout, including a cooler mounted on the swim platform, fender holders, cupholders, and other storage options.
Worth noting, the new Neo Mint exterior color was brought over from Sea-Doo’s family of PWCs. The maximum 300hp upgrade, which is a 70hp jump from previous year’s models, also means you gain a 46-gallon fuel tank to increase your time on the water.
Inspection
Built with a lightweight composite material for enhanced durability and performance, the Polytec hull features a multi-chambered design with a deep-V hull shape. Up top, the see-through bow gate and side panels increase your visibility and stand 22 inches in the stern and 25 inches tall in the bow.
Performance
With the Rotax 1630 ACE 300hp engine, we reached a top speed of 40mph after a zero-to-20 mph time of just over 7 seconds. The cruise control feature lets you lock in your speed and comes in handy on long stretches.
The handlebar steering is truly unique, making your time in the helm chair an absolute blast. We were able to bank slightly in the sharp turns, and she performs well like you’re on an oversized personal watercraft. Quick note: improper distribution of passengers and cargo weight could overload the front of the watercraft and cause instability or nosediving. However, we didn’t experience any issues or have any concerns during our test.
Final Thoughts
Like all Switch models, this one comes standard with an engine and trailer to simplify the boat-buying experience. The versatility and affordability sets this Switch apart.
