I wrote Stay Awake around Christmas 2018, and gradually fleshed it out more over the last year to play with my band, TwiceSax. This weekend, I decided to tackle sequencing it for live solo performance. +100 internets if anyone can figure out the significance of the title. Hint: music theory and music history will be helpful.
The ostinato is Behringer Neutron with no patching. Roland SE-02 handles bass, and Arturia MicroFreak plays the chords. All sequencing is done in instances of StepPolyArpUnit. Everything is hosted in AUM on a 5th generation iPad. Everything is performed live except for the EWI lead; I overdubbed that line with my “standard” breath control patch on the Behringer Neutron. Basically, oscillators in octaves, one triangle (high) and one square (low). Breath opens the filter and modulates pulse width on the square oscillator after being inverted and attenuated.
I am using RoughRider3 compression on everything, Eventide Blackhole reverb on the ostinato and the EWI lead, K7D delay on the ostinato, and Blamsoft chorus on the chords and EWI lead.
A couple big mistakes: I accidentally deleted the EWI video :(
I also accidentally dropped an alternate take of the solo while mixing the audio...and I liked the sound way more than my actual solo, so it stayed in.
Enjoy!
