Indian coins are made in four government-owned mints (Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Noida) through a process of melting metal alloys, rolling them into sheets, punching out circular "blanks," annealing (softening), cleaning, and finally striking them with dies to imprint designs, followed by quality checks and packaging, all managed by the India Government Mint under the Ministry of Finance, fulfilling orders from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

know regarding full process 2026

1. Design & Material Sourcing:
The RBI identifies demand, and the Government of India's Ministry of Finance oversees production.
Metals like stainless steel (for many modern coins), copper, nickel, and zinc alloys are chosen for durability and cost.

2. Metal Preparation:
Raw metals are melted, cast into large ingots, and rolled into thin, uniform sheets.
These sheets are then fed into a blanking press to punch out circular "blanks" (planchets).

3. Annealing & Cleaning:
Blanks are heated (annealed) to soften them for striking.
They are then cleaned and polished (pickled) to remove impurities.

4. Striking:
Blanks are placed between two dies (obverse and reverse) in a high-pressure press.
A single strike impresses the design, date, and mint mark (a small symbol like a diamond, star, or circle) onto the coin.

5. Finishing & Distribution:
Coins undergo quality control, inspection, and sometimes additional finishing.
They are counted, bagged, and sent from the mints to RBI offices, then to currency chests, and finally distributed to banks for public circulation.
