Invoking the spirit of Kai Londo. "Londo, Kai Londo, Kai! No man wages war on his Fatherland/No man wages war on his Motherland."
Kai Londo's (founder of Kailahun and Luawa State) renown and place in history is inextricably linked to Ndawa, his erstwhile friend and eventual foe. In everything one was the opposite of the other. Ndawa was taller, light-skinned, brash (as his name suggests) and extremely fearless; the trademark scar he had on his forehead in later life was from a sword wound he received from Kai Londo. Kai Londo, was smaller, older by about 10 years, unassuming (as the name "Londo" suggests) but with a great military mind. Ndawa died in battle in 1888, aged about 37 (it was during his engagement in battle with the warrior Mendegla) . Kai Londo died from illness in his fifties.
Oral history said they both trained at Tikonko with Chief Makavory. Chief Makavory would later call on his former pupils when he was attacked by Benya of Bo-Wo. Kai Londo and Ndawa formed a military alliance against Benya of Bo-Wo in a punishing campaign that stretched from Tikonko all the way into Kono country. This military campaign came to be called "Kpoveh Goi" - Dung Pot War, in reference to a pit of dung into which Ndawa threw any man who displayed cowardice. Kai and Ndawa eventually fell out. The 25-year-old Ndawa wasn't too impressed with Kai's men and he also felt he'd been cheated of his fair share of the spoils of war. When their armies finally met, the outcome of the war was decided in single combat between the two leaders, Kai Londo coming out victorious and sparing Ndawa ("Nya le Kai Londo; ngi wilea--- I'm Kai Londo; I have jumped." At the sound of Kai Londo's voice, Ndawa rushed forward crying out: "Bi Ndawa malea naa---You have met Ndawa now." Round and round they circled each other, their swords beat wild slashes on the ground as they looked for an opening. Suddenly it came. Ndawa rushed in, wounding Kai Londo on the right arm. Kai switched the sword to the other hand and landed a glancing blow on Ndawa's forehead. Stunned, Ndawa fell to the ground, but Kai Londo wouldn't finish off a man on his back. He threw his sword away and the two leaders wrestled). Even when Kai Londo came out on top he spared Ndawa's life, allowing the latter to leave with his warriors. Kai Londo only exacted from Ndawa two prizes: Landawulo, his wife, and Kpundeh, his son. Kai Londo's army followed Ndawa and his men and drove them across the Moa River at Manowa. At his death Kai Londo was the overlord of all Kissi lands in what is today Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia.
