Hello, my dear YouTube subscribers and viewers! Welcome back to the channel. Today, we're tackling a common issue on the Lenovo IdeaPad C340 with Core i7 processor. If your original keyboard is faulty—keys sticking, not responding, or just misbehaving—replacing it can make your laptop feel brand new again. I'll guide you through the full disassembly and replacement process step by step.
Important note upfront: In the Lenovo IdeaPad C340 series (models like C340-14IML, C340-15IWL, etc.), the keyboard is not easily replaceable on its own. It's riveted with plastic tabs to the upper case assembly, which includes the palmrest and touchpad. The recommended and cleanest way is to replace the entire upper case with a new one that comes pre-installed with the keyboard. This ensures perfect fit and feel. Trying to separate just the keyboard involves cutting rivets, which can be risky and may make the new one feel bouncy or loose. I'll cover both options, but I strongly suggest the full assembly for best results.
Before starting, gather your tools: Phillips screwdriver (sizes #0 and #1), plastic prying tools or spudger, tweezers, and an anti-static wrist strap if possible. Find a clean workspace and take photos at each step for reassembly reference. Always power off the laptop, unplug it, and work safely to avoid static damage.
You'll need a replacement part. Check your exact model number (on the bottom sticker) and buy a compatible upper case with keyboard—search online for "Lenovo IdeaPad C340 upper case keyboard assembly" plus your model. If attempting separate keyboard swap, get a matching keyboard, but again, it's not ideal.
Let's start disassembly:
1. Flip the laptop upside down on a soft surface. Remove all bottom screws—there are about 10-12 Phillips screws of varying lengths. Keep them organized in a tray or labeled bags.
2. Carefully pry off the bottom cover. Start from the hinge area or edges with your plastic tool. Work around gently to release the clips—don't force it to avoid breaking tabs. Lift the cover off to expose the internals: battery, SSD, RAM, and fan.
3. Immediately disconnect the battery for safety. Locate the battery connector (a white plug on a cable) and gently pull it straight out with tweezers or your fingers.
4. Remove the battery fully by unscrewing its 3-4 holding screws and lifting it out.
5. Now, disconnect other cables: fan cable, speaker cables, touchpad cable, and any others visible. Note their positions.
6. Remove additional components if needed, like the SSD (slide out after unscrewing), Wi-Fi card, or heatsink/fan assembly (unscrew and lift carefully).
7. To access the keyboard properly, you'll need to remove the motherboard. Unscrew all motherboard screws (marked with arrows often), disconnect remaining cables like the display cable (flip up the latch and pull gently), power button cable, and any antennas.
8. Lift the motherboard out carefully—it's now free.
At this point, with the bottom empty, flip the upper case over. You'll see the keyboard rivets (plastic stakes) on the underside.
For full upper case replacement (recommended):
Transfer all components (motherboard, fan, speakers, cables) to your new upper case assembly.
Ensure everything aligns perfectly.
For separate keyboard replacement (advanced, not recommended):
Use a precision knife or Dremel to carefully cut the plastic rivets around the keyboard edge.
Pry and lift the old keyboard out.
Install the new keyboard, aligning it properly.
Secure it by melting new plastic stubs (using a soldering iron on spare plastic) or strong adhesive. This can be tricky and imperfect.
Reassembly is the reverse:
Place motherboard back, reconnect all cables securely.
Screw everything down snugly but not overtightened.
Reinstall battery, connect its cable last.
Snap the bottom cover back on and replace all screws.
Power on the laptop and test the new keyboard thoroughly—type in a document, check all keys, touchpad, and functions.
There you go! You've successfully revived your Lenovo IdeaPad C340 by fixing that faulty keyboard. This repair saves money over buying new and extends your laptop's life. Always back up data first, and if you're unsure, consider professional help.
