Red takes you through a carb tuning on a 2002 Polaris Sportsman 500 4 wheeler. This is a typical adjustment for any slide valve carburetor. He goes through the steps of fine tuning from adjusting the air:fuel ratio with the fuel screw to opening the top end of the carburetor and adjusting the slide valve. When he can’t find the right ratio within a setting of the slide valve, he changes the slide valve setting, readjusts the fuel screw and finds the proper air:fuel mixture to run properly from idle, through mid throttle and into higher throttle. The key is having the throttle responsive at each level of throttle.
As usual, Red explains the tools he’s using to help him get the job done, and hopefully you find a little entertainment value as well as a tinge of humor involved. Tools used in this episode include a Gearwrench 1/4” long handle, locking flex head bit driver/ratchet. A Tekton #2 Phillips head hard handle screwdriver, and Engineer’s Najisaurus PZ-80.
