The Fight Over States’ Rights

Описание: Compact theory is an interpretation of the Constitution that advocates an extremely expansive version of states’ rights. Throughout American history, states have repeatedly tried to use this theory to justify invalidating federal laws they disagreed with on topics ranging from tariffs to segregation to gun control. The theory was even used by the South at the start of the Civil War to argue that states had a legal right to secede from the union. Despite facing repeated setbacks and rejections, compact theory has continued to shape conflicts between the federal government and the states all the way up until the present day.
