Steven Reid arrived at Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 2003 from Championship side, Millwall, as manager Graeme Souness looked to add some steel to his squad.
Reid's debut for Rovers, at the Reebok Stadium, was an eventful one and lasted all of 12 minutes, as the substitute was sent off following a strong challenge on Bolton's Stelios. Reid would miss three months of his first season at the club in 2003/04, due to a hamstring injury, and this limited his first team action.
Things fared better in the 2004/05 season for the midfielder, as he made 34 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals. His best time in a Rovers shirt came during his third season at the club, in the 2005/06 season. Helping Rovers to a top 6 finish and reaching the semi finals of the League Cup, Reidy made 39 appearances that season and chipped in with five goals.
The most memorable and stunning of his goals came at the JJB Stadium as Reidy fired in a thunderbolt from outside the area against Wigan. A goal that won't be forgotten and one that remains, to this day, one of the hardest struck shots in Premier League history.
Unfortunately, a series of injuries meant that Reid could not recapture the form shown in 2005/06. The 2006/07 season saw Reid miss the majority of it, firstly through a back injury, and then due to a cruciate knee ligament injury sustained in January 2007, which ruled him out of the rest of the campaign.
Reidy did make a recovery and made 25 appearances for Rovers in the 2007/08 campaign, as Rovers finished 7th in the Premier League. However, this was to be his last sustained run of games in a Rovers shirt. Another serious knee injury ruled him out of the 2008/09 season and he only managed to make four appearances in the 2009/10 season, his final season at Rovers. Reid's last goal for Rovers came against Peterborough United in a League Cup tie.
Steven Reid was an industrious, tough tackling, all action player for Rovers, who had a good range of passing and who could strike a ball as good as any. His versatility was of benefit to both Graeme Souness and Mark Hughes as Reid played well in a number of positions, ranging from wide right, centre mid and right back. Sadly, injuries meant that Rovers fans could not get to see more of Reidy in action. His 2005/06 campaign is the one that sticks in the mind of Rovers fans, and THAT goal at Wigan!
Reidy made 134 appearances for Rovers over seven seasons, scoring 8 goals. Here are all 8 of those goals.
