Abstract:
The great legacy of Andean ritual and myth has often been called an oral tradition. But that is at best a half-truth. From the 1580s on, post-Inka society shaped itself through literacy, and developed a distinctive lettered nexus among the pillars of Andean life: agropastoralism, ritual exchanges with “Mountain Beings,” and segmentary ayllu (clan-like) organization. This talk concerns the Andean ethos of writing entwined with water, irrigation, and governance. It presents ethnographic experience in the Lake Titicaca basin, the Province of Huarochirí, and the Cordillera Waywash, 1989-present.
