Broncos weapon Payne Haas has changed his name after a week where he has dominated NRL headlines.

The star prop shocked the NRL world when announcing he has signed with South Sydney and will walk away from the Broncos at the end of the 2026 season.

In another twist to his rollercoaster month, Haas has also changed his first name to “Hakeem”, as indicated by a change made to his Instagram page.

The 26-year-old has made the change to honour his Islamic faith, Code Sports reports.

According to the report, the wrecking ball forward has not legally changed his name, which remains Payne Luckee Haas.

The name “Hakeem” in Muslim communities refers to someone considered to be “wise” and is a title used when referring to well respected members of the community, including doctors and scholars.

It is also one of the 99 names of Allah in Islam.

Haas made the decision to join the Muslim faith in 2019
