It's one of the most important conversations facing society: how do we recognise the inequalities built into existing systems and what do we do about it?
In this video, I introduce the basic concepts of Decolonisation, and what it means for the Music Curriculum. At the outset: it doesn't mean we're getting rid of anything from the 'classical music' tradition. If anything, it means thinking and talking about so much more than that.
I stress that I am not an expert but it's important for all of us to be having conversations on this topic, so I'm starting one here. I haven't been able to cover everything, and there are certainly really important things that I've missed (and likely some things that I've got wrong, too). Please get involved - comment below with your thoughts. If you're a scholar - let me know some recommendations, or even better, suggest ways we might approach this in further videos.
In the process of putting this introduction together, I consulted a range of sources by authors from ethnically-diverse backgrounds across different areas of music education, music-making, and history (and I didn't get to mention all of them in the video).
