This video tells the life story of Henry II, the ruler who restored royal authority to England and laid the foundations of its legal system.
Born in 1133 during a time of civil war known as The Anarchy, Henry grew up surrounded by instability. Through inheritance, marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine, and military strength, he built one of the largest realms in medieval Europe, stretching from England deep into France.
As king, Henry focused on reforming justice and strengthening royal courts. His legal changes helped shape what would later become the English common law system. Yet his reign was also marked by conflict—most famously his dispute with Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, which ended in tragedy and permanently affected Henry’s reputation.
In his later years, Henry faced rebellion from his own sons, leading to personal and political strain. He died in 1189, leaving behind a powerful but fragile empire. This gentle bedtime history follows his life as a steady balance between reform, ambition, and the weight of family and authority.
