From the phone screen, I heard the blogger’s cheerful voice: “Which city is this suitable for you? 😂” I smiled and showed him the window of my bedroom with the camera—beyond it was a street with wooden houses, each with a lush flower bed on the balcony, and in the distance an old park with a small lake, where people walked their dogs and drank coffee on benches. The air was filled with a subtle scent of strawberry cake and fresh flowers, and in the distance, the sound of church bells could be heard—this is Gdańsk, the city I came to for a year of student exchange.
At first, I was afraid—I didn’t know anyone, I didn’t know the language, and the apartment I rented was small, but it had a balcony with a view of a garden. But after just one week, I fell in love with this city. Yesterday after school, I went to the market, where I met an old woman named Anna, who was selling her own strawberry and homemade jam cakes. “Hi, girl! Do you want to try one? It’s my best family recipe,” she invited me, handing me a piece of cake on a flower-patterned plate. It was the most delicious one I’ve ever eaten—juicy, sweet, with the natural taste of strawberries from her own garden.
I put the phone on speaker so Anna could hear the blogger’s question. “Ms. Anna, which city is this suitable for you?” I said. The woman smiled, looking at the surrounding buildings with balconies full of geraniums and tulips: “This is a city where everyone knows everyone, where there’s no noise of cars at night, only the sound of birds in the morning and the rustle of water in the park’s lake. It’s a city for people who love peace, warmth, and small, pleasant moments. I’ve lived here for 50 years, my family has been here for generations—I never wanted to leave, because this is my home, my garden, and my friends.”
I told the blogger about my daily adventures—about morning walks along the seashore, when the sun rises and covers the water with golden light, about the café on the corner where the barista Tomasz knows my favorite drink—coffee with milk and a pinch of cinnamon, about meeting friends from school in the park, where we play board games and talk about our countries. “This is a city where you feel like home, even if you’re a stranger,” I said. “There are no big shopping centers or noisy streets with neon lights here, but there’s a lot of love, warmth, and small joys that make life more beautiful.”
The blogger smiled from the other side of the call, and I could see he was happy: “This city is perfect for you! It looks as peaceful and beautiful as you are. I can tell you’re happy there.” In the evening, I went to the seashore with my friends, watched the sunset, which painted the sky pink and orange, and talked about our homes. I thought that Gdańsk is exactly that city—not big, not famous, but perfect for me, because here I feel welcome, happy, and full of joy. And the answer to the blogger’s question? It’s simple—only Gdańsk.
