ICELAND EU REFERENDUM: Voters Reject Restarting EU Membership Negotiations | Times Now World

Описание: Icelandic voters have rejected a proposal to reopen negotiations on European Union membership, dealing a setback to efforts to revive the country’s long-stalled accession process. The referendum asked whether Iceland should resume talks with the EU, rather than whether the country should join the bloc immediately. Opponents had warned that membership could threaten Iceland’s fishing industry and argued that the country already benefits from access to the EU’s single market and the Schengen travel area. Supporters said reopening negotiations would allow Icelanders to examine the terms before deciding whether membership was ultimately in the national interest. The result marks a setback for the pro-EU camp and leaves Iceland outside the bloc for the foreseeable future.
