Yes, UVB light from the sun can help plants in some ways, but too much of it can actually harm or damage the plants.
A little bit of UVB light can:
1. Make plants produce more vitamins and healthy compounds
2. Cause plants to grow shorter and stockier
3. Help plants fight off insects and diseases better
4. Potentially help with flowering and fruiting
However, a lot of UVB light can:
1. Burn or sunburn the plants.
2. Slow down the plant's food-making process (photosynthesis).
3. Stunt the plant's growth.
4. Create harmful molecules that can hurt the plant.
Most grow lights used for indoor plant growing try to have very little or no UVB because too much is bad, as excessive exposure can be harmful to both plants and humans. The recommended dosage is 1-2 watts of UVB light per square foot of growing space, used for 2-3 hours per day during the late flowering stage. Plants grown outdoors get a good amount of UVB from natural sunlight already.
So in summary, a little UVB can benefit plants, but you have to be really careful not to overdo it, as too much UVB radiation will end up damaging the plants more than helping them.
