The Dying Swan, is a famous solo ballet choreographed by Mikhail Fokine, especially for Anna Pavlova, based on music by Camile Saint-Saens from The Carnaval of the Animals, “Le Cygne” or The Swan.
Composed in 1886, The Carnaval of the Animals is a humurous musical suite of fourteen movements by the French Romantic composer.
The Swan is the 13th and penultimate movement, originally scored for solo cello accompanied by two pianos, it has been arranged and transcribed for many instruments but remains best known as a cello solo (accompanied by solo piano).
The Swan song is a metaphorical phrase for a final gesture as it refers to an ancient belief that swan sing a beautiful song just before their death since they have been silent for most of their life time. The ballet itself was first titled “The Swan”, but then acquired its current title, following Anna Pavlova’s interpretation of the work’s dramatic arc as the end of life. The dance uses principally of upper body and arm movements and tiny steps called pas de bourree.
Michael Fokine created the famous ballet in 1905, as a solo ballet, after being inspired by the reading of poem by Tennyson. “The Dying Swan” is actually not about a woman impersonating a swan. It is about the fragility of life- and the passion with which we hold on to it.
Anna Pavlova’s dramatic intensity forcibly conveyed this truth to the audience. She was a Russian prima ballerina of the late 19th century, early 20th century, the principal artist of the Imperial Russian Ballet and the Ballets Russes of Sergei Diaghilev. Pavlova is most recognized for the creation of the role The Dying Swan and, with her own company, became the first ballerina to tour ballet around the world.
Her famous quote:
“Where there is no heart, there is no art"
