Rejection hurts because your brain thinks it’s an injury.
That ache in your chest after a breakup?
The gut punch of being left out?
It’s not “just in your head.” Your brain processes social rejection through the same pain centers as physical injury.
Studies show rejection activates the anterior cingulate cortex + insula (aka your brain’s pain hubs).
So if you’ve felt heartbreak in your body, you’re not being dramatic.
You’re being human.
Instead of overthinking it, try regulating first:
Orient to your space
Use deep pressure (weighted blanket, self-hug)
Signal safety to your system before spiraling
You’re not too sensitive. You’re just wired for connection.
My book, End Emotional Outsourcing: How to Overcome Your Codependent, Perfectionist & People-Pleasing Habits, shows you how to regulate your nervous system. To rewire your brain and body for self-trust. To finally put yourself at the center of your own life - where you’ve always belonged.
👉 Out September 30th.
