Sandy and Luna have been practicing wingers more vigorously each day. They are not quite ready for lift off yet. Their flight feathers are still growing; they are still building muscle and most of all they are building confidence.

Eaglets generally fledge between 10 to 14 weeks. Historically the Big Bear chicks fledge around 13 weeks. Sandy and Luna are now 7 weeks old, so we still have plenty of time to enjoy their antics! Even after the big fledge, Sandy and Luna will likely return to the nest for mealtime, rest and even overnight stays. They should also remain in the area for another 4-12 weeks after fledging.

Sandy and Luna’s legs and feet are now fully grown and depending on their gender, can weigh between 7.5 and 9.5+ pounds. Speaking of gender, the only true way to determine gender is with a blood test. What we can do is make an educated guess at about 9-10 weeks by observing their overall size, beak length and thickness, ankle/feet size and finally their vocal pitch. You may have noticed that there is quite a difference between Jackie and Shadow’s vocals. Male and female bald eagle have a different vocal pitch range.
