This is a weekly test of Mt. Vernon's Weather Siren System tested every Wednesday at 1:00 PM Central Time, weather permitting. What you are hearing is the oldest siren active in Posey County, which for all you geography lovers, lies exactly in the southwest corner of the state. It borders with neighboring Kentucky and Illinois. Posey County has many Whelens, most of which are Hornets, as well as a few Sentrys which make up the bulk of Mt. Vernon's system. There are also several Modulators at a nearby refinery but I'm unsure whether or not these are tested at the same time.
This siren is located on top of the fire and police station. It's mounted at a decent height as well. From where I recorded, it was not very loud and it was possible to hear the surrounding Sentrys quite clearly. It was not the loudest Model 5 I've ever heard. I'm also not a fan of the louvers either. However, the abundance of surrounding buildings helped create an amazing reverb effect. Any siren that I have recorded in a downtown area has had this effect and has continued to impress me every time.
*Yes, this is the same siren TheWeatherGuys recorded awhile back. • Mt.Vernon IN Model 5
