Perhaps the most subtle and fleeting aspect of portraiture is the complex variety of facial expressions that portray human emotions. In my upcoming online class at the New York Academy of Art via Zoom, students will learn how the features change to convey different moods, and create well-structured paintings of these dynamic facial expressions. This six-week course, which is for artists of all levels, will cover the fundamental recognizable human expressions, as well as the subtle and fleeting nuances that convey mood changes in the features. There will be an in-depth analysis of how the shape and relationships between the features and their surrounding muscles change to express different emotions. There will be both oil painting and drawing demonstrations.
