Media vita in morte sumus
—“In the midst of life we are surrounded by death”—
is one of the most poignant texts of medieval Gregorian chant.
This responsory appears in 10th-century manuscripts,
preserved at the Abbey of St. Gall,
in present-day Switzerland.
St. Gall was one of the most important monastic centers in Europe
during the High Middle Ages.
Between the 9th and 11th centuries, its monastery housed an exceptional scriptorium,
where monks copied liturgical, theological, and musical books
that are now considered fundamental to the history of Gregorian chant.
