The Grandeur of the Krishna: Srisailam – The Lifeline of the Telugu States. Nestled in the lap of nature amidst the Nallamala hills, the Srisailam project on the Krishna River is far more than a mere stone structure. It represents a monumental endeavor—akin to the legendary feat of Bhagiratha—that dispels darkness #weather
while meeting the drinking and irrigation water needs of millions across the two Telugu states. Standing at the forefront of hydroelectric power generation in the country, the story of this project's construction is truly fascinating. A Shared Vision and a Long Journey: The project was conceived in the mid-20th century with the resolve to lay the foundation for industrial and agricultural revolutions on Telugu soil.
The foundation stone was laid in July 1960 by the then Chief Minister, Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, and the project moved forward by overcoming numerous challenges. Thanks to the tireless efforts of engineers over nearly two decades—navigating the rugged terrain of the Nallamala forest and the turbulent flow of the Krishna River—the structure became fully operational in the 1980s. Initially for Power, Later Multipurpose: The project was originally proposed solely as a hydroelectric power station. However, recognizing the evolving irrigation needs of the Rayalaseema and Telangana regions, the leadership of the time transformed it into a multipurpose project. Beyond providing irrigation water, the project has set a record as the country's second-largest hydroelectric project, boasting a total power generation capacity of 1,670 MW through hydroelectric stations established on both the right and left banks. Ancient heritage lost to history: When the Srisailam reservoir fills up, it resembles a vast ocean. However,
there is a history of sacrifice behind this project. Due to the reservoir's backwaters (submergence zone), the ancient Sangameshwara Temple, along with numerous historical villages and cultural sites along the banks of the Krishna River, were submerged. Although the Archaeology Department relocated some ancient temples to safer areas, many historical remnants were lost forever within the depths of the Krishna River. Current challenges—water management: Today, the Srisailam project serves as a pivotal hub for water sharing and power generation between the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
During flood seasons, the sight of Krishna's waters being released downstream through the 12 crest gates captivates tourists. Despite challenges such as depleting water levels in summer and inter-state water disputes, Srisailam's role in transforming the Telugu region into a fertile, lush landscape remains unforgettable.
