Discount Link Below! Air conditioner not cooling properly? This is the Installation an RV Airflow System in a Rockwood or Flagstaff camper with a shallow plenum. Many of these Forest River RVs contain Coleman Mach air conditioners, and the installation is not as simple as some other campers. Thor Class C Campers may also have a shallow plenum.

I have a 2021 Rockwood Mini Lite 2109S. (Same as the Flagstaff Micro Lite 21FBRS.) My travel trailer came with a Coleman Mach, ducted air conditioner unit.
I thought the air flow was ok but I knew it could be better.
Earlier this summer we arrived at our campsite with the thermostat inside the camper reading 90 degrees and no shade to be found. It took several hours for our camper to cool off that day.
I’ve even read in some of the forums that people are buying floor model, stand-alone air conditioning units for their campers just to assist the roof air conditioning units that came installed in the camper. I guess they just rig up the exhaust ducts and run them out the windows.
It’s always going to be difficult to keep a camper cool on very hot days, even in the shade. The walls and roofs are very thin and just don’t have room for a lot of insulation.
How do I make my air conditioner work better?
In my mind, the first thing I want to do is make sure my existing air conditioner is as efficient as possible before considering a second or supplemental unit.
Along comes the RV Airflow, which directs the supply air directly into the ducts (instead of into the open plenum) and allows for a much greater area for return air to be pulled back into the air conditioner.
The company says this improves airflow by 40%, making your system much more efficient. It cools better!
I thought this would be a simple installation but was very mistaken.
The biggest issue I ran into during the installation was that Rockwood had run the wires across the hole where the supply air exits the Coleman Mach air conditioner. The wiring was completely in the way of simply sliding the RV Airflow system into the plenum.
With a little exploration and effort I was able to slide the wires out of the way so that they lined up with the wiring channel in the top of the RV Airflow insert.
The rest of the install was completed as instructed.
I would recommend a couple things:
First, measure your plenum depth and width BEFORE ordering this system. RV Airflow posted instructions on their website. You need to know if you have a standard or shallow depth plenum so you can order the correct model.
Second, take your time and don’t get frustrated if your RV Airflow system doesn’t just slide up into the hole. The RV manufacturers and installers did not ever consider that someone would be improving the existing system.
The RV Airflow directions are adequate, but I still found that watching several YouTube videos really helped.
You can do it!...and be cooler all summer with an air conditioner that works as it's supposed to.
