Clarifying questions, playing back what has been asked with scenarios, analogies, or examples to confirm that you understand what has been communicated.

I am a Career Ready mentor and this month the session with my A level student mentee centred around preparing for the workplace of a potential internship. At one point in our discussion, my student asked me how to confirm instruction with their manager, without bothering them -- nagging them -- undermining their standing with them.

This is a great question because every engagement is a bringing together of two different perspective, contexts and realities. Until we get to know a person and what their objectives and motivations are, we're learning and need to clarify with them with relevant examples and scenarios to ensure we're on the same page.

It's also a good reminder that we should regularly take a step back from trusting what we believe is normal and expected by clarifying what we think we know in scenarios that seem to be static. Because in business, in the office, the status quo can shift unexpectedly, and checking where the wind is blowing by confirming information and directives can help us avoid wasting our time and that of our manager.
