On September 5, 2025, Minnesota officially dedicated the Tribal Flag Plaza at the State Capitol in St. Paul, marking a historic moment where the flags of all 11 sovereign Tribal Nations in the state were permanently raised. Located on the lower mall, this new,, accessible space symbolizes partnership, sovereignty, and the enduring presence of Indigenous peoples in Minnesota's past, present, and future.
Key Details of the Ceremony and Plaza:
Significance: Minnesota became the second state in the nation to feature a permanent plaza for all its tribal nations' flags, aimed at fostering better government-to-government relations.
The Ceremony: Held on September 5, 2025, the event included Governor Tim Walz, Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan, and various tribal leaders, featuring Dakota and Ojibwe flag songs and prayers.
Design & Features: The plaza includes 11 flagpoles, with each base featuring sacred plants selected by each respective tribe. It is constructed using Minnesota-sourced granite for pavers and benches.
Participating Nations: The 11 flags represented include the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa, Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, White Earth Nation, Lower Sioux Indian Community, Prairie Island Indian Community, Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, Upper Sioux Community, and Red Lake Nation.
Background: The project was part of the 2023 legislature's investment in the capital mall design framework.
