What Do We Do When Life Puts Us in a Dilemma?
David was desperate to escape from Saul’s hand. Every day Saul hunted him like a criminal, and David knew his men and families were in danger. So, he moved into **Ziklag**, a Philistine city (1 Samuel 27).
To *King Achish**, this was an opportunity—he knew David’s strength as a warrior, and he thought, *“If David fights for me, Israel will be weakened, and I’ll be stronger.”
David agreed, pretending loyalty to the Philistines. Outwardly, it looked like he was serving Achish, but inwardly his heart still belonged to **God and to God’s people**. His ultimate loyalty was not to Achish, not even to Saul, but to the Lord Himself.
Yet this put David in a difficult dilemma. On one side, he needed Achish’s protection to keep Saul away. On the other side, he could not betray his own people—the very people he would one day lead.
How could David solve this? To refuse Achish would endanger his men. To fight Israel would betray his calling. It was an unsolvable problem.
But here’s the beautiful truth: *God solved it for him.* Before David ever had to choose, the Philistine commanders rejected him and sent him back home (1 Samuel 29:4–7). We may not know whether David would have actually fought—the text leaves that question open. But we do know this: David never lifted his sword against Israel. And that wasn’t luck. It was **God’s protection**, moving even through unbelieving Philistine leaders to safeguard David’s future.

Application for Today
We often find ourselves in similar situations—dilemmas where every choice seems wrong.
Maybe at work you’re pressured to compromise your integrity.
Maybe in your family you feel torn between two sides.
Maybe in your personal life, no option seems safe.
Like David, we don’t always see a way out. But God is not trapped by our dilemmas. Sometimes He closes doors. Sometimes He removes us from the decision altogether. Sometimes He brings help from unexpected places—even from people who don’t serve Him, just as He used the Philistine commanders.
So what do we do when life puts us in a dilemma?
*Hold on to ultimate loyalty to God.* Like David, let your heart remain true even if your circumstances are complicated.
*Trust God to intervene.* He sees ways out we could never imagine.
*Look back and give thanks.* Many times, the things we call “bad luck” or “closed opportunities” were really God’s protection.
👉 *The lesson is simple:* When you face a dilemma you cannot solve, trust the God who already has a way out.
