Strong Thunderstorm Clusters Drop Torrential Amounts of Rain - Pompton Plains, NJ July 14, 2025

Описание: Yesterday's thunderstorms more than made up of my town getting mostly dodged by storms last week and a lack of any notable heavy rain or stormy weather this month (outside of the 3rd's potent, albeit relatively brief, thunderstorm line). Yesterday's setup was a classic "High CAPE, low shear" type of environment with multiple clusters of thunderstorms forming out ahead of a cold front (a not very effective one, at that), that were very slow-moving due to limited low-level wind shear, but dropped downright biblical amounts of rainfall due to the extreme moisture and instability in place. NJ felt a lot more like Florida during much of the day yesterday with dewpoints reaching the mid to upper-70s. Towards the mid to late afternoon hours, a very slow-moving and pretty weak cold front began to approach, which interacted with the environment in place to form multiple clusters of storms that were also very slow-moving and formed on top of each other from resultant outflows, leading many areas to become trapped under training thunderstorms with torrential rain for hours on end. My town ended up with 3.31 inches of rain in just a few hours time, with almost 2 inches of that rain falling in just an hour. Other areas got up to 5-6 inches of rain, and this subsequently lead to many flooding problems across the state with flooded or even washed out roadways and neighborhoods. The northern/central NJ area was completely covered in Flash Flood Warnings. Personally it's been a while since I've seen my backyard that filled with rain water, but luckily we had no water damage around my house or the street. Even though these storms were part of a cold front, there is going to be no break from the relentless heat and humidity this week (outside of a possible small break Friday night/Saturday), and there is also several more storm chances for this week.
