What kind of medicine do we actually want? How can medicine be truly human?
A keynote by Karin Michael and Adam Blanning, held on 15 September as part of the International Annual Conference of the Medical Section 2024 at the Goetheanum.
As technology and artificial intelligence increasingly permeate the medical field — replacing human connection even in areas like psychological care — we are faced with a paradox. While medical tools grow more advanced, the very heart of medicine — the human encounter — is quietly slipping away. At the same time, we see a dramatic rise in psychiatric disorders, burnout, and addiction, particularly among those in caregiving professions.
The lecture invites us to reflect on how medicine can remain truly human. How do we care not only for the physical body, but for the whole person — body, soul, and spirit? Karin and Adam also explore the growing difficulties children and adolescents face in experiencing vitality and joy, and draw attention to the epidemic of lifestyle-related diseases, such as heart failure, which often stem from our industrialized society’s detachment from natural rhythms.
