Описание: Trial Bay is a broad bay on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, Australia. The bay faces northwards and extends from Laggers Point in the east around to Grassy Head to the west, past the town of South West Rocks and the Macleay River mouth.

The bay is named after the brig Trial which was shipwrecked there in 1816.

In 1820 John Oxley explored the area. He reported Port Macquarie as more favourable for settlement than Trial Bay, though Trial Bay might offer an anchorage while waiting for favourable winds to cross the bar at Port Macquarie.

Trial Bay Gaol has amazing coastal views that surround it in Arakoon National Park. The gaol opened in 1886, after 13 years of construction. It must have been a strange feeling building a prison in such a beautiful setting. The prison labourers were there to construct a breakwater to make Trial Bay a safe harbour between Sydney and Brisbane. Unfortunately the scheme failed, however you’ll still be able to see the remains of the breakwater from the guard tower lookout. During World War I the gaol became an internment camp for people of German descent who were feared to be enemy sympathisers.

German Monument

This stone obelisk is located on the Monument Hill Track in the Arakoon National Park at Trial Bay. It is dedicated to all residents of German descent who were interned in the Trial Bay Gaol during the First World War. The monument was erected in 1918, destroyed in 1919 and restored in 1960.
