On September 4, 2018, Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra sent a letter to the Central government, recommending Justice Ranjan Gogoi as his successor. Justice Gogoi will be sworn in as the next CJI on October 3rd. Justice Gogoi will be the first Chief Justice of India from the North East - where he started legal practice as a lawyer 40 years ago.
