This is part two of the answer to the question from a subscriber comment regarding how to install a distributor in a Gen 1 small block Chevy. This one contains quite a bit of detail, walking through all the steps and considerations in making the installation, especially if you are doing a new installation and need to install the distributor without knowing where it was before you removed it. You can see the trial and error required in lining up the oil pump drive shaft so that it will go together properly. This is a small block Chevy, with GM HEI ignition with a magnetic pickup. The basic process is similar for most other distributor type engines. Setting the static timing may vary a little if you have breaker points or an optical pickup instead of a magnetic pickup. It would have been easier in some ways to do this before the plenum was installed, but the plenum had the alignment marks from when the distributor was last removed. Background: This is a "Barn find" 1985 IROC-Z Z28 Camaro with Tuned Port (TPI) LB9 engine that has been parked for 25 years. The original owner passed away and his father sold the car to me. What will be required to make this car run again after being parked for so long? It has just over 101,000 miles, all the parts are there, and it seems to be in good condition, except for the engine and fuel system. This project intends to make this car run again and put it back on the road.
