When I saw Sloan's stark black ridgeline looming across the North Fork of the Sauk River on a training hike up Painted Mountain earlier this year, I knew I had to add it to my list of objectives for the season.
For those looking for a great introductory alpine climb in Washington, Sloan Peak’s Corkscrew Route has it all: a mellow glacier approach, a meandering trail over verdant heather ledges, and a rugged—but rewarding—Class 3 scramble on mostly solid rock. It’s a classic North Cascades mountaineering route, topping out on one of the most iconic summits in the Henry M. Jackson Wilderness.
Sometimes clouds kill your views—and sometimes they make them.
The day began overcast, but in true Cascades fashion, the sun started to break through as it rose during our climb up the glacier. While the clouds never fully cleared, they added to the beauty of the route. As we scrambled up the Corkscrew, ragged wisps of mist curled across the ridge, and we were rewarded at the summit with a spectacular undercast— with only Sloan and Glacier Peak breaking completely through into the blue.
