The Kaveri engine, developed by DRDO’s GTRE since the 1980s, is a low-bypass turbofan designed for India’s Tejas fighter. Despite advanced features like FADEC and 80 kN thrust, it was dropped from the Tejas program in 2008 for not meeting performance needs.

Delays stem from technical and infrastructure challenges, such as lack of experience in aerothermal/metallurgical design, sanctions limiting access to materials like single-crystal blades, reliance on Russia for testing, and a shortage of skilled experts. A failed partnership with France's Snecma in 2013 further hindered progress, leaving the engine underpowered and overweight for Tejas, which now uses GE engines instead.
