We Learn to Drive a Tuk Tuk in Sri Lanka

Описание: In February 2020, we spent an entire month exploring Sri Lanka by tuk tuk. And yes, we did all the driving! Learning to drive a stick shift is like a lot of other things in life—you can describe it for hours, but the best way to master it is to just throw yourself into it and make some mistakes. Which is exactly what we did.

We rented our tuk tuk (also called a "bajaj" in Sri Lanka) from tuktukrental.com. Luckily, part of the rental included a (free) comprehensive driving lesson. We learned how to throttle, shift gears, navigate traffic, and restart a stalled engine (which happens a LOT). Our teacher, Melvin, was so patient and friendly, and Lainey went from zero experience with a manual transmission (aka "stick shift") to driving a three-wheeled tuk tuk with an...interesting gear shift setup. Spoilers: You have to shift through neutral every time you go from first gear to second gear. It takes some getting used to, and a whole lot of muscle memory.

We chose tuktukrental.com because their business model supports local tuk tuk owners (you rent a vehicle from a local) and they're tuk tuks are solid. Shawn has actually driven a tuk tuk across India in the Adventurists Rickshaw Run (2017) so he was the primary driver, but Lainey put in plenty of time behind the "wheel".

Tuktukrentals.com has tons of useful information for renters—including a detailed map of attractions from other drivers exploring Sri Lanka, and a 24/7 WhatsApp text chain with everyone else driving around Sri Lanka. We actually used it to get in touch with the maintenance team about our steering system (it was fine).
