Was the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost “the first and last time it ever happened, or has it ever happened again? Could it happen now,” or “are we just looking back to something rather than sharing in it?”

These are some of the questions that David Pawson explores as he considers the contrasting church views of the experience of Pentecost. We are to “search the scriptures” to identify the correct view, but David’s testimony describes the extraordinary ways in which the Holy Spirit worked powerfully in his life just as he was asking these very questions. It includes his moving account of how a particularly difficult work relationship with one individual in the church was transformed into a life-long friendship.

Having the Holy Spirit “is absolutely essential to live the Christian life” but first we must “repent of all known sin and put right what can be put right”; we must believe in the Lord Jesus as our Saviour. Getting baptised in water gives us a “clean conscience”. We confess that we are dirty and “need cleaning up”, for which specific sins need to be confessed. As David puts it: “You are not ready for forgiveness of sin until you have repented and confessed”, and repenting “means putting right what can be put right”.

David explains that because baptism cleans up our past but not our future, we also need baptism in the Holy Spirit “to stay clean”. To live on the new Earth, forgiveness and holiness are required because “without holiness no one will see the Lord”. Forgiveness is “the work of the second Person of the Trinity, Jesus”; holiness is “the work of the third Person, the Holy Spirit”.

David mentions five of the areas in which the lives of the disciples “were radically changed after the Day of Pentecost”. After they had been baptised in the Spirit, they received confidence, guidance (led by the Spirit), power (the supernatural gifts of the Spirit), unity (the fellowship of the Spirit/koinonia with everybody who had been filled with the same Spirit), and purity (able to be holy).

David challenges us: “Do you want the courage, the guidance, the power, the purity, the unity? Those are the reasons for asking for the Holy Spirit”.
