In 1945, an elderly farm worker was found savagely killed on the slopes of Meon Hill. His body was pinned to the ground with his own pitchfork. Rumours spread that this was no ordinary murder, but a ritual killing rooted in old English witchcraft.
In this episode, I investigate the chilling case now known as the Pitchfork Witch Murder: the killing of Charles Walton in the Warwickshire village of Lower Quinton. I’ll explore the original police files, local folklore about the "Black Dog" of Meon Hill, and the theories that have surrounded this case for decades – from witchcraft, ancient stone circles to occult sacrifice.
We’ll also look at the role of the famous detective “Fabian of the Yard”, and ask why this brutal crime remains officially unsolved.

I’m Peter Laws: author, Fortean Times columnist, former church minister, and recurring expert on BBC’s Uncanny. I investigate and document true, and often terrifying, reports of the unexplained. These cases are never fictionalised, and many stories on my channel are told for the first time. This case has been covered before, but not often in as much depth.
If you enjoy thoughtful, atmospheric explorations of true hauntings, folk horror, and unexplained mysteries, you’re in the right place.
