About the piece: Soldiers' Marches seem to be something usual and ordinary in the head of the children of the 19th century. Of course back then there were a lot of wars in many countries. But also the music repertoire tells us that soldiers and marches are popular in children's repertoire. Also Schumann, Prokofiev and Kabalevsky composed marches or even soldiers' marches in their albums for children.
Tchaikovsky wrote to his patroness Nadezhda von Meck in May 1878: "I want to create a series of little individual pieces just for children, and with an attractive title, like Schumann's [obviously referring to Schumann's "Album für die Jugend" Op. 68]. Tchaikovsky dedicated this Album to his back then 6-year-old nephew Vladimir Davydov.
