Glenn Gould prepared a radio recital for CBC Tuesday Night, broadcast on November 25, 1969. The programme was Brahms: Intermezzo in A Op.118.2 [“pad played after credits” and therefore possibly the Columbia recording (Canning catalogue)], Mozart: Sonata in Bb K.333, Mozart: Sonata in Bb K.570, Pentland: Shadows (Ombres), and Scriabin: Sonata 5 Op.53. The Mozart sonatas and the Scriabin sonata were released by Music and Arts, but they mixed up the two Mozart sonatas, which explains why the cover displayed here does not look correct. Music and Arts did not release the Pentland item.
This rendition is a little quicker and considerably less ornamented than the later Columbia recording. He 'plays' all the repeats, although I think I detect that the A section of the first movement was regenerated – the singing matches and there is a noticeable splice at the double bar.
Kevin Bazzana describes it this way in the notes: “Above all there is an infectious comic spirit throughout these sonata performances, even occasional lazzi of various kinds: quirky turns of phrase, witty broken chords and measured cadential trills, a coy unwritten fermata (K.570/III/m.34), and other devices that add a splash of humour. This is the Mozart of Figaro and it is not out of place in the sonatas.”
