I am very excited to share a rare treat from the golden age of Garage. I know Todd Edwards has stated in many interviews that Todd Terry was one of his influences when developing his signature vocal-chop sound. In the late 1980s, Todd Terry played a major role in the development of Garage House and Tribal House, by combining hip-hop sampling techniques from Latin Freestyle with House beats. Vocal chop stabs were a main component which I'm sure inspired Todd Edwards with the idea of using vocal samples as percussion. I've been digging this sound myself recently as it's a lot like Todd Edwards sound but in a more "progressive" arrangement and a rawer feel like his early tracks.
Todd Terry founded Freeze Records in 1991 and introduced a producer named Eddie S aka Eddie Sancho. I really like this guy's work and the atmosphere in his "Tribal House, Progressive Garage" sound. He was only able to release 7 EPs in his career between 1992-96 but each track is just pure sampled epicness. This mix album complied by Roc & Kato of Digital Dungeon Records is a great showcase of his work. Enjoy!
