Permaculture Is Political - Zena Cumpston
Our food system exists upon the history of this soil. This talk extends on how the landscape of First Nations acknowledgment and 'Inclusion' is riddled with land mines. This contribution aims to address the way in which those who engage in land management, agriculture, food growing, biodiversity actions and 'care for Country' may be perpetuating the harms of colonisation whilst concurrently making claims to innocence.
This talk highlights some 'trends' of inclusion encouraging participants to reflect on their own practices and to consider what reciprocity can look like if we consider reparations, structural complexities and challenges.
Zena Cumpston (she/her) is a Barkandji woman who works as a storyteller, manifesting in engagements as an artist, writer, educator, curator and consultant. Her multidisciplinary practice is centered around protecting and celebrating Country. She is particularly interested in Indigenous plant knowledge, food sovereignty and working to empower young and emerging First Nations people.
Zena strives to democratise research, creating projects that invite a wide audience and provide platforms and meaningful opportunities for her community and intergenerational learning. She has a healthy disrespect for colonial institutional practices and boundless energy for critiquing and disrupting the ongoing harms of colonisation.
PermaQueer is deeply grateful for Zena’s generosity & wisdom in this webseries, her ongoing commitment to furthering justice is a benefit to the world.
