In this video, we explain how to use AEMC®’s 6474 GroundFlex® Field Kit in conjunction with our 6472 Digital Earth Ground Resistance Tester to test a power line transmission tower. These towers are highly susceptible to lightning strikes (which can result in dangerous flashover conditions) and therefore need to be properly grounded. The GroundFlex® Field Kit enables you to accurately measure how well each tower is grounded, as well as test the quality of the overhead ground conductor connection.
This video introduces the GroundFlex® Field Kit, which is built around the AEMC Model 6472 Ground Resistance Tester operating in conjunction with AEMC’s Model 6474 GroundFlex® Adapter. Other kit components include sensors, electrodes, and all required leads, connectors, and wiring. The video explains how to set up the kit to obtain static readings (such as passive resistance and leakage current) using a four-legged lattice tower as the test subject. We then dynamically test the total tower resistance, initially at a baseline frequency and then via a “sweep” from low to high frequencies.
