This is the Andean Condor, considered the largest bird of prey in the world and, among all birds, one of the largest capable of flight. Yet sheer size alone is not always enough to identify it at distance. Adult males show a distinctive white collar and bold white square patches on the upper wings, most visible when the bird banks, making them surprisingly easy to recognise against the mountain sky.
They are found mainly along the high Andes of Chile and Argentina, where vast slopes and rising thermals suit their style of flight perfectly. Condors are famous for rarely flapping their wings, instead soaring for long periods on uplift with barely a movement. At the end of this video, however, you can see one of their slow, considered wingbeats — a powerful reminder of just how large these birds truly are.
