This is char made from spongy, rotten wood, punk for short. I collect the punk from rotting logs and find the softest bits that don't crumble to dust. I used an altoids tin with a couple holes in the top to burn the punk in, same as how charcloth is made. The punk burns with little oxygen, which drives off all the unstable natural gasses, and essentially only leaves charcoal behind. I know when it is done cooking in the fire because smoke no longer comes out of the vent holes in the top. I remove it from the fire, allow five minutes to cool, and then it's ready to use. This char easily catches sparks from a steel striker and quickly forms into a robust, hot ember. My favorite part about it is how readily available the materials for it are in nature. I always keep a full container of char with my flint and steel in my haversack and backpack so I have back ups when I'm outdoors.
