Nelson is a small town in Victoria AUSTRALIA, known for its fishing and scenic location. Nelson is located at the mouth of the Glenelg River and Discovery bay. It is 422 kilometres west of Melbourne.

In 2016 the Nelson population was 190 people.

In January 1852 the name Nelson was adopted after the ship Lady Nelson.

A punt was built across the river in 1848 to ferry people and belongings across the river. A holiday house was also built in 1848, which later became the current hotel.

The town site was surveyed and named in 1852. Sheep grazing began soon after that. And the 1st Post Office opened March 1876.

The first crossing over the Glenelg River was built out of wood in 1893. It was replaced by a steel bridge in 1963. A second concrete bridge was added in 1997 to cater for the demands of road freight travelling through the town.

Some of the activities you can enjoy around the town are

Canoeing / Kayaking, Fishing, Swimming, Birdwatching, Power Boating, Water-skiing, Snorkelling, Diving and Bushwalking.

The Great South West Walk is a bushwalking trail suitable for most ages and abilities. These walks include short walks, full-day walks, or the whole 250km loop.

The track begins in Portland and follows the Glenelg River downstream through Nelson, before returning along the coastline back to Portland.

The walk called Aussie Camino is a 176km Hard walk that takes approximately 11 days to walk. This walk starts in Portland, Victoria and finishes in Penola, South Australia.

Open daily, meals, bottle shop, accommodation.

Open daily for takeaway meals, groceries, fishing supplies, fuel/gas supplies, newspapers and magazines.

Nelson has a variety of accommodation from budget, places suitable for families, couples, even fishers with boat parking, hikers, road trippers and canoeists.

There is hotel/motel accommodation, a caravan park, camping and cabin options, and a number of self-contained holiday houses.

Glenelg River Cruises:
This business does a number of cruises up the Glenelg River.

Princess Margaret Rose Caves: These caves where first discovered in 1936, the cave are known for their stalactites, stalagmites and other limestone shapes.
