On the edge of one of England’s largest forests lay a medieval building abandoned for nearly a century. Dating back to the 1400s it was built by the Prior of Our Lady's Priory Thetford by license of the king to hunt small game. This gamekeeper lodge continued to be used as a rabbit warren until the early 20th century before being converted into a farmhouse and abandoned soon after following a fire in 1935. A famous ghost story surrounds this location relating to a so called ‘leper’ who is believed to haunt the lodge. A caretaker of the lodge between 1903-05 claimed a man suffering from leprosy once inhabited the top floor a century before and he even found his bell and begging bowl - although was advised not to touch these for fear of cross contamination. The caretaker also claimed to have a frightening encounter with the spectral leper on the spiral staircase of the lodge. So intense was the paranormal activity he later resorted to bricking up the stairwell entrance. Said to have black holes where his eyes and mouth should be this spirit is still terrifying passersby in modern times and recently a detailed eye witness came forward who identified the entity in blue and white ragged clothing peering down from the upstairs window - bearing in mind there are no internal floors for him to stand on. During medieval times those suffering from leprosy were kept separated from the rest of the community and isolated on the edge of the town due to the highly infectious nature of the disease.
