What is an Inukshuk?
An Inukshuk (pronounced in-ook-shook) is a stone structure built by the Inuit and other Indigenous peoples of the Arctic regions of North America, especially in Canada.
The word “Inukshuk” means “in the likeness of a human” in Inuktitut, the Inuit language.
What Does It Look Like?
Traditionally, an inukshuk is made by stacking stones to resemble a human figure — like a person standing with outstretched arms. However, some are simple piles of rocks in different shapes.
What Is It Used For?
Inukshuks served many important purposes, especially in the harsh Arctic landscape:
• Navigation or Landmarks: Used like signposts to show directions or mark trails.
• Hunting Aids: Placed to help guide caribou during hunts.
• Food Caches: Marked areas where food was stored.
• Spiritual Symbolism: Represented safety, guidance, and community.
