Описание: Chlorine gas gained infamy as a weapon of war in World War I and more recently in Iraq and Syria. However chlorine actually provides critical function as a disinfectant and sanitizing agent in our daily lives. This primary component of household and commercial bleach aids in purifying drinking water, allows safe swimming and decontaminates waste. Additionally it assists in the manufacture of paper, cloth, plastics, solvents, pharmaceuticals and even cosmetics. Exposure to higher concentrations irritates respiratory passageways and leads to symptoms ranging from burning of the nose and throat to coughing, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath and accumulation of fluid in the lungs. Death follows rapidly after exposure to high concentrations. Potential for terrorist attacks on poorly guarded railcars and trucks transporting the material as well as storage facilities raises concern in our toxic social environment.
