In Mali, the junta government and the Canadian firm, Barrick, continue to be at loggerheads. In the latest, Malian military helicopters landed unexpectedly at Barrick’s Loulo-Gounkoto mine and seized over a metric ton of gold, said the company. The gold is worth over 100 million dollars. Earlier, in January, the junta government seized three tons of gold from the site. The junta-led Mali government is now planning to sell this gold to finance the mine's operations. Barrick called the plans to restart operations or sell gold from the site "illegitimate and ill-advised".
