In part one of three filmed segments, artist and master printer Phil Sanders discusses the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop where Sanders served as director and master printer. In conversation with Katherine Blood, Sanders talks about Bob Blackburn's founding of the workshop and explores Blackburn's legendary contributions as a color lithographer and woodcut artist. Sanders also looks at an example of Blackburn's collaborative work with artist Grace Hartigan while Blackburn was the first master printer at Universal Limited Art Editions studio.
Phil Sanders has worked as a collaborative printer since 1997, serving as director and master printer at the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop from 2006-2015 and collaborating with hundreds of artists in such other notable print workshops as Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE), West Islip, N.Y., Trillium Graphics, San Francisco and David Krut Projects, Johannesburg, South Africa. Sanders has also taught at Stanford University, San Francisco State University, Penland School of Crafts and the Frans Masereel Center.
Katherine Blood is curator of fine prints in the prints and photographs division of the Library of Congress. She helps build, preserve and share the Library's extensive collection of artist prints and specializes in modern to contemporary graphic art by American, Hispanic and Japanese artists.
